I will never know how long I spent adjusting values on that interface. Everything I changed gave me a feeling for the results. The more I revised, the better I got at understanding what I was feeling. Eventually, finding a small range of settings that allowed life, then a smaller range that allowed intelligent life. Interestingly, many of the settings outside of the core, few that allowed or disallowed life, had significant impacts on the type of life or the expression of matter in the universe but didn’t change the core settings. Also fascinating were a vast array of settings that referred to forces that my home universe had never discovered. Things that fit under what my scientific training wanted to call magic. Items that fit rather neatly into the myths and legends of home, making me wonder about leakage and crossover between universes.

Eventually, several undefined eternities later, with a traditional “Let there be light.” I pressed the Start Universe button…
