Fabric of Space, Time, and Confusion
The universe is nearly as flat and cold as it can get inside a galaxy over sixteen lightyears from the nearest star or planetary system. Reality, Gravity, Dimensional, and Electromagnetic fields are all near enough zero except those generated artificially by the well-shielded station two light-seconds galactic spinward of the target zone.
“I am uncomfortable with how much attention this is getting.” Muttered Dave, “It’s like they are expecting something beyond the wormhole that Professor Evens’ theory predicts. Also, why isn’t Evens’ here?”
“Relax, Dave,” answered Julie, “Evens isn’t here because he’s a pure theory guy. He hates to get his hands dirty with the engineering details and can hardly be bothered to supervise a couple of double post-docs who worked out the hardware to prove his theory. We are getting attention because if this works, the logistics of star travel just got a thousand times easier, and we just got rich and famous.”
“I don’t think it’s that simply Jules. If it, were we would have reporters and scientists watching, not the military and security services. I just have a bad feeling about all of this.”
She shrugged before making the final remote adjustments to the field generators around the point in space just under 600,000 km distant. Waiting the 4.4 seconds for the adjustment signal and conformation to make the round trip to all generators. Confirming the last settings, she sent the 30-second count down activation.
34.402 seconds later, the universe rippled.
