The ecosystem of Online’ Hookup’ sites a Perspective

To be clear, I am not talking about mainstream online dating sites, like Tinder, Bumble, or OkCupid, I am talking about the places that are explicitly targeting primarily hookups and casual sex. I know that the mainstream sites can be for hookups, it wouldn’t surprise me if that was what their most common use. But, that isn’t their primary focus; it is a side effect of the medium.

First, I admit that this entire subject is probably both cliché and more than a bit misogynistic on the surface. The stereotype is obvious. The middle-aged white male goes trolling online for hot young trophy wife/girlfriend/sugar baby or at least trophy one-night stand, that idea is highly misogynistic and more than a bit wrong. Sure, that vibe is there on many of the sites, especially the shadier ones. The wink, wink, nudge, nudge, this isn’t prostitution sites, the guaranteed *uck tonight sites, and the *uck an X sites. Even the more “classy” and “reputable” sites, there is always a veneer of desperation about the users, with a few exceptions, and it’s those exceptions I am talking about here. Remember everything below is from my perspective, so is wildly biased and probably inaccurate from a non-white, non-male, non-middle aged standpoint. On a further note, I am not distinguishing the groups by what sex they want for a hookup. Some of each group below is looking for…
