The insanity of our culture’s response to sex work shown as insanity with the following two stories. The following assumes that both women are both of age and consenting with no coercion involved.

  1. I meet a woman online, take her out to dinner and drinks at a nice restaurant, spending a couple of hundred dollars. We go to a hotel and have sex. This sex act is legal.
  2. I meet a woman online, meet her at a hotel, give her the c couple of hundred dollars I would have spent on the date. We have sex. This sex act is illegal.

The existing rules make number two more likely to break the assumption that the women in that scenario are both of age and consenting. Which is insane, we should be making it easier and safer to be an open sex worker rather than harder. That would cut down on the nasty side effects. Hell, we just have to look at the United States’ attempt at alcohol prohibition in the 1920s, criminalizing alcohol just made everyone a criminal. Sex between two consenting adults is none of the government’s business, except for collecting taxes if any money changed hand
